What Does It Mean To Be Franciscan?

Hello, everyone, and welcome to this special AFCU Reflection Series!

My name is Tim, and I work with Brother Greg Cellini in the Office of Mission, Ministry, and Interfaith Dialogue at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY. At St. Francis College, we have a tradition called St. Clare & St. Francis Week which includes various events which celebrate our Franciscan foundation and mission. This joyful series of events always happens during the week of October 4th - the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

Since we and many other colleges have these celebrations at the beginning of each October, it made sense to us here at SFC to make a push for October to be known as Franciscan Month so that the joy of this special first week of the month could get more deeply rooted on our campus and branch out further into our surrounding communities. Greg and I met with Debi Haug of the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities (AFCU) to discuss the concept, and we agreed to pursue it by means of this reflection series. Debi helped us contact the mission officers within the AFCU network with a request to write a reflection based on the question: "What Does It Mean To Be Franciscan?" We are delighted to share these reflections with you over the last 10 days of October as we close out the first Franciscan Month!

Greg and I are truly grateful for Debi's help on getting this series together - thank you, Debi! We are also grateful for each contributor from our fellow Franciscan institutions - thank you all for your thoughtful participation! And, of course, we are grateful to you, our readers, for tuning in for these reflections. By the end of the month, we are sure to have a deepened and refined perspective on what it means to be Franciscan.

Happy Franciscan Month!

Tim
